Solutions
We strengthened the house by inserting an internal steel frame, keeping a brick shell exterior. We then dug out the basement to create two new rooms and added a new roof structure which allowed us to include a winter garden.

Top Tips
Basements are a wonderful way to add living space to your home within a confined area of land, if you are unable to extend outwards or sideways. Soil composition has often been considered as an obstacle to building basements and whilst that may have been the case several years ago, today we have solutions to deal with any type of soil or even water penetration levels.
Work with a reputable interior designer and create detailed mock ups of the look and feel of the spaces you are creating including electrics and plumbing before you start the building work. Think about where your furniture or art collections will be placed so that your lighting and switch placement is planned before your builder starts work. Changing specifications mid build will only cause delay in work completion and add to your cost.
